Hopefully everyone has had the chance to enjoy some time with their family and friends. 2016 was a positive year for our athletic program and as we move to 2017 many more exciting times are in store. Our student-athletes in grades 7-12 have been hard at work over the holidays. As the calendar moves in January now they get a chance to compete and strive to earn league championships and get ready for the state tournament.
Our varsity girls’ basketball team has been quite busy so far and is already through half of their regular season games. The girls are in first place in the ITCL Blue Tier and will get into the bulk of their league schedule this month. The girls record is currently 9-2 overall and they are 2-0 in their league schedule. On Thursday, January 5th, the McDonald Lady Blue Devils come to our place. This is a rematch of last year’s District Final game and will go a long way in deciding the league championship. Two days later the 7th, the girls will travel to Columbiana High School for a tough match up. After watching our wrestlers, cheering on the YSU Penguins come on out and watch the girls. The girls are at Sebring for a varsity only 6 PM tip on the 9th and on the 12th they travel to Mineral Ridge. Lastly, Kaitlyn Totani is only 32 points away from scoring her 1,000 point. Our Junior varsity team is showing a lot of promise on the court and is currently undefeated on the year.
7/8th Grade Girls
Our 7th grade and 8th grade girls have enjoyed some time off and will look to get back on the court in the next few days. The 7th grade girls are 5-1 and really are a fun group to watch play together. Our 8th grade girls have a one win on the year but have been improving each game and with only having 6 girls on the team they are still battling in each game. These two teams will be busy over the next two weeks with games against United on the 4th and this is an 8th grade only game, a home game against Crestview on the 9th, and a away match up with Sebring on the 11th. Come on out and check them out.
Our varsity boys’ basketball team has been off games for a while but has been hard at work with practice and a little team bonding. Coach Procopio and his staff took the boys to the Mount Union Holiday Christmas Tournament on Friday, December 30th. This was a great opportunity for our boys to see a college basketball game and getting to enjoy some bonding time. The boys have two tough test this coming week with trips to Lisbon on the Tuesday and then they are McDonald on Friday night. Then they will return to home on Friday the 13th against Sebring. They will also host Lordstown on the next night as well. We will be having a Halloween Celebration in the student section that night and anyone is welcome to partake in the fun. Also, we are planning to take part in the Statewide Military Appreciation night on January 20th with more details to follow. The freshman team will have two home games on January 9th and 12th at home with both games starting at 5:00 PM.
7/8th Grade Boys
Both teams have been hard at work getting ready for January and the opportunity to finish out their schedule. The 7th grade basketball team is improving each game and is getting more comfortable with each game. The 8th grade team is currently 3-3 on the year and starts 2017 on a two-game win streak. Both teams return to action on Wednesday the 4th, with games against United. They will travel to Crestview on the 9thand return home on the 11th to face Sebring. The teams have a busy month of games and as always appreciate the support.
Wrestling (All levels)
Christmas is a time where many of us indulge in Christmas cookies and an extra helping of our favorite dishes. Our wrestlers hopefully got to enjoy some holiday favorites but will be hard at work in the next two weeks. The junior high wrestlers will be home on Tuesday, January 3rd for a quad match which will be a full night of wrestling on our new mats. The Leonard Truck and Trailer Wrestling Tournament will take place on Saturday 1/7/17 at the high school. Wrestling kicks off at 10 AM. This is an all day event and will feature many quality opponents that will get a chance to compete against all of our high school wrestlers. Come on out and enjoy a great day of wrestling and remember that the cost is $8.00 for Adults and $4.00 for students and NO passes will be honored at this event.
