Mr.Hogue's Sports Update Week of 01-17-2017

Athletic Department Update and Schedule 1-17-17 to 1-29-17

There have been many events at the high school and middle school level over the past two weeks and hopefully you have had a chance to catch some of the action.  The schedule the next two weeks are packed full of games as well.

Girls Basketball

Our varsity girls basketball team has had an eventful two weeks since the last report.  The girls currently sit at 12-3 on the year and are in first place in the ITCL Blue Tier.  The girls also have been given votes in the Ohio Associated Press Girls State Basketball Poll for division 4 and are currently rated 16th in that state poll just released.  Kaitlyn Totani scored her 1,000 career point on January 9th which is a huge accomplishment.  Her twin sister has the opportunity to do the same in the next few weeks.  The junior varsity team is still undefeated on the year. Our varsity and junior varsity girls will be in action on Thursday of this week at Western Reserve in a game that will go a long way and deciding the league championship.  They will then travel to Lowellville and McDonald next week in two important ITCL games.   Our 7th grade girls are currently 6-2 on the year and have been growing all year.  The 8th grade team continues to improve in each of their games.  Our middle school girls start a 3 game home stand over the next two weeks and are home on Wednesday of this week and then Monday and Wednesday of next week.

Boys Basketball

Our boys high school teams have been heating up and have been successful over the past two weeks.  The boys varsity team has a record of 5-7 on the year and picked up two wins in the past two weeks over Lisbon and Lordstown.  The Junior Varsity team has been equally as impressive and currently has a record of 7-5 on the year.  The boys high school basketball team will be home on the following dates; January 20,21, 24, and the 27.  A few special events are planned over this time period.

On January 20th we will hosting a state wide event known as #OhioStrong2017 which is a military appreciation event.  All military members both current and retired will be given free admittance to the game on this night. This is only for the military members and we ask that they have military ID to show to our ticket taker at the door.  We will also be having a small ceremony to honor all military before the event including a moment of silence to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. We are asking everyone to wear red from both schools to show our appreciation for the military.  We will also have our 5th and 6th grade boys playing at halftime of the varsity game.

On January 27th we will be hosting Western Reserve in the annual “Trophy Game.”  This annual game is a true battle between two rivals and is an exciting game for all involved.  We will kick off the action with the Boys JV game at 6:00 PM and then varsity will follow at 7:30.  At halftime of the varsity game there will be a battle between the two schools 6th grade basketball teams.

The Boys freshman team picked up a win over Mineral Ridge this week and will return to action on the next two Thursdays at Columbiana and East Palestine.  Our 8th grade team is  currently 5-4 on the year and the 7th grade picked up two big wins over the past two weeks.  They will return to action on 1/18 at Lowellville, 1/23 for an 8th grade only game at Wellsville and 1/25 at Leetonia.

Wrestling

On January 7th, 2017 we hosted the Leonard Truck and Trailer Wrestling Invitational at Jackson-Milton.  This is annual event and is something that the wrestling community really looks forward.  This is an event that is a chance for alumni to come back to and see old teammates and check out some great wrestling at the same time. Nick Scarl took 2nd place in his weight class and his teammates, Jeremy Seka, Ryan Staton and Nick Vergallito all took 3rd place.  The wrestlers will host Liberty this week on Wednesday and all wrestlers including the pee-wees will be taking part in this match. We will also have senior night for Nick Vergallito on this night as well. The varsity team will be going to the Josh Hephner Wrestling Tournament at Fitch this coming weekend.  Wrestling starts on Friday afternoon and this is a tournament that attracts many teams from all around the area.  The junior high team will be going to Columbiana on Saturday for a wrestling tournament as well.    We will also be hosting the ITCL junior high Championships as well starting at 10:00 AM on 1/28/17.
